Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers

Fallen Angels is a Vietman-War story full of action, comedy, and drama. It is told from the point of view of a soldier named Richie Perry, a black manjust out of high school. He had dreams of playing basketball until heinjured his knee during a game. In order to keep his family out of thepoor house, Perry joined the military, hoping not to get into too much combatdue to his injury. That did not work out in his favor... By being sent toVietnam, Perry gained some great friends and got a few more injuries on hisplate, and learned many life lessons in the process. But the question isif he can survive until the end of the war? Surprisingly enough, FallenAngels was a great book (in my opinion).

What they had for dinner, how work is stressing them out, newrelationships, why do they put these things on the internet? ...But wait, it's1996, Facebook hasn't even been invented yet... What Emma and Josh arelooking at are their Facebook profiles 15 years in the future, where it showstheir future friends, spouse, kids, job, location, everything. The thing is, everything they do now effects what their future will be, so every time they log on,something's different. Will they save themselves from making massive mistakes in thefuture, or just make things go completely haywire?

I loved this book! Iread it because Jay Asher, the author of 13 Reasons Why, (Which i also liked),co-wrote it. The characters are lively, realistic, relatable, and full ofpersonality. The pop-culture references are funny, the romance is suspenseful,and you'll stay up late reading cause you just have to know what happens next! It has that fantasyfeel, since they can pretty much see the future, yet it seems real. It has a little of everythingso I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

It's 1950'sNew york, Kit ran away from her home in Rhode Island, to become famous, and totry and forget about her bad breakup with Billy, who is in the army and isheading to Korea. Kit got a job as a showgirl, but the money just isn't enough,Billy's father, Nate, who is a former gangster, and currently a lawyerdefending criminals, gives Kit a great apartment and designer clothes, sowhat's in it for him? All he asks is Kit try to get Billy to come home, and doan occasional favor for him...

The book has lots ofromance and a little mystery. However, the romance is kind of unexplained, Kitloves Billy, will do anything for him, and vice-versa, but why? The bookmentions that Kit cried constantly because of Billy, and Billy seems to geteasily irritated by Kit. I found myself NOT wanting them to be together. Thecharacters seemed a little dull too, easily forgettable, with littlepersonality. The ending was... Not great, I have unanswered questions about afew things. It's kind of a sad ending too, but i never really got emotionallyattached, and failed to sympathize with the characters. It's not a completelyterrible book, but i don't really recommend it, if you really want YAhistorical fiction, I'd try The Luxe series instead.

Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

The Hunger games takesplace in a future United States, where war and natural disasters have destroyeda huge portion of it. The city, Panem, is split into 12 districts, and theCapitol, which rules over the districts. The Capitol hosts a televised, annualevent called the Hunger Games, which one boy and one girl from every districtare randomly chosen to compete in. The goal of the games is to survive, onlyone person can win. Basically they put the competitors in an abandoned,jungle-type area, where they have to find food and shelter for themselves,while trying to kill, or completely avoid other players, last man standingwins. 16-year-old Katniss's skill, wit, and determination are put to theultimate test when she voluntarily takes her 12-year-old little sister's placein the Hunger Games. I love the book, it's a real page turner, with nonstopaction, and even a little romance plot, it keeps you thinking "I wonderwhat happens next?!" The book is part of a trilogy, and leaves off on kindof a cliffhanger, so be prepared to really want to read the next book the minuteyou finish book 1.

Wisdom's Kiss by Catherine Gilbert Murdock

Wisdom's Kiss is a remarkable story written by the same author, Catherine Gilbert Murdock, who wrote Dairy Queen and Princess Ben. The adventure follows multiple storylines from Dizzy (or Princess Wisdom), who is really terrible at being a princess and longs for rebellion; Tips, who longs to keep his true identity secret from his childhood friend Fortitude; and Fortitude, who longs only for Tips. The whole story is told in different points of view, the diary of a narcissistic swordsman, the letters of two lovers, the script of an up-and-coming play, and other creative perspectives, which gives the reader an exciting new view that's rarely experienced. I would definitely suggest this to anyone who loves a classic bit of magic, and an exciting fairytale adventure.

Possess by Gretchen McNiel

Gretchen McNeil‘s first novel “Possess” is about 15 year-old half Irish/half Chinese exorcist Bridget Liu. Who’s trying to adjust to sudden changes in her life, like, her father’s murder, and finding out that she has the power to banish demons back to the underworld. This book is very dark, the whole thing is about demons, ghosts, murder and exorcisims, so, not great if you're more into the "happy books". Bridget is a kick-butt heroine, sarcastic and can come off as a little rude at times. This book is great if you like horror or mystery type books. (Which, I do.) The book has a great and interesting plot that kept me up late at night, reading. It has mystery, horror, suspense, a little humor, action, romance, and some unexpected plot twists. However, the book lacks details on the characters, and you don’t really get to know their personality very well. I did like the book though and I’d love to see it made into a movie!

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney 1

This is the first issue in a series of manga based on the Capcom video game Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. This manga follows the same format as the game, as in being divided into separate cases that all tie into each other, rather than just one storyline. There are various references to the game, from small character references to the trademark “OBJECTION!!”.
This particular issue includes all of Case One, Turnabout with the Wind, in which Phoenix is yet again tasked with proving his friend Larry Butz innocent of murder, and the first half of Case Two, Turnabout Gallows, in which a man commits suicide after claiming to be chased by “the spider”, and Phoenix must prove the victim’s boss innocent of the crime. If you’re a fan of the Ace Attorney video games, or just a fan of mystery in general, then try this book out. Trust me, it’ll be worth the time.

Set in southern Louisiana in the late 1940s, a man named Jefferson is convicted of murder. Jefferson, being a black man, was simply just in the wrong place at the wrong time and is sentenced to death without even a speck of evidence that he committed any crime. Grant Wiggins, the town's grade school teacher, is asked to visit Jefferson up until his day of execution to teach him how to be a man. He is put up to this by Miss Emma, Jefferson's godmother, who is best friend to Tante Lou, Wiggin's aunt. Wiggins overcomes many obstacles and learns many life lessons (ironically) while teaching Jefferson through simple lessons. Just by following these simple lessons allows Jefferson to die like a man with his head held high.

Its about Butttercup, and how torn she is between Westley, her first love, and Prince Humperdinck, who she has promised to marry. There's battles for claim of the princess, battles for the sake of battling, battles for love, battles to see who is the strongest, or bravest. When she has finally lost all hope of love, that when Westley comes back for her, and she can't decide between love and promises; until she realizes that the prince plans to kill her! Love, adventure, and a possibly happy ending? Yes please!

I started this figuring it would fail in my expectations. I'm happy to say it passed. :) This book reminded me of the Tamora Pierce books. The romance was expected, but different and much better than the normal teen books out there. The plot was surprising, fun, upbeat, and had unexpected twists. The characters were well-rounded and shockingly, had flaws! Read this book, I hope you like it!

So religion is something most people like to try not to worry about. Just be good most of the time and you’re set, right?

Wrong.

If you believe that all it takes to get into Heaven is be a “good” person, then do yourself a favor and read this book. It’s not even 100 pages long, and the pages are small. Obviously using the Bible as its base for information, this book digs deep and shows the truth behind what salvation really is and how to get there. Recounting the story of Jesus Christ and His teachings on earth, from His birth to resurrection, Stantely shows what the Bible says about salvation and what it takes to go to Heaven. Also, he has a very easy-to-understand and humorous way of writing, ensuring that the book never gets boring. It’s a fun read, but it also may be one of the most important books you will ever read. After all, your eternal future kind of depends on it. Trust me, you’ll enjoy the book, and if you don’t go to church often then maybe this is just what you need.

Radical by David Platt

This is definitely one of my favorite books! The author talks about living a radical life for Christ, and everything that it involves. He reminds us that Christ says that when following Him, we will GIVE UP money, convenience, security, even family to follow Him. Christ says we have to pick up our crosses DAILY, but honestly, who lives like that now? The author explains what this means, and how it should affect our lifestyles, and how it has affected people in his church. He talks about churches around the world, where they could get arrested or even killed for meeting together, but they love Christ so much that they go anyway. They don't have the fancy churches we have, the musical entertainment we have, some don't even have Bibles, but that doesnt stop them from meeting together. That's Radical, and it makes me ask myself if I would be willing to keep following Christ in those circumstances.

At the end of the book, the author lays out a plan for how we can live a radical life, such as praying specifically for the whole world, spending time in missions, and spending more time in the Bible. He includes stories of how this plan has changed the lives of some of the members in his church, and how it has changed his.

Join us at the Bossier Central Library to celebrate Teen Tech Week! We'll kick off this year's program on March 5th at our regular Social Saturday program by making artwork and jewelery out of old computer parts and telephone wire! We'll also do some creative writing via text messaging!

Tuesday, March 8th, 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM - Movie Mix & Mash - Two of our Teen Advisory Board members, Joe and Jamie, will demonstrate how to make your own movies. They'll also show you how to upload these movies to a computer, how to edit the movies, and how to upload the movies to sites such as youtube and facebook!

Thursday, March 10th, 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM - Music Mix & Mash - Teens are encouraged to bring their own portable musical intrustments to this program, during which, local teen, Rachard Dennis, will perform some of his own music. Afterwards, everyone will have an opportunity to play their own instruments, listen to others play, and just hang out!

In the world of Delirium love is a disease, so when you become 18 you get the vaccine for it. When you turn 18 and after you receive your vaccine, a committee decides who your husband or wife will be and they also decide if you go to college or not and what your degree is. Lena is a soon to be 18 year old who wants the vaccine more than anyone else. She 'surprisingly' meets a guy who's 19 and has already been given then vaccine. Nonetheless stuff happens and she falls in love. I like this book, I wish it had more world-building because I found the whole love is a disease part very interesting. The romance between the two characters were so-so. I wish there was more romance between the two but there wasn't. I would not read this book again, but I would recommend it to others.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series by Rick Riordan

The series Percy Jackson and the Olympians is one of the best book series in my opinion. It is written by Rick Riordan and was also made into a movie. The first book in the series, The Lightning Thief, is really amazing and had made me really interested in Greek mythologies. It is a really good book and if you are interested in Greek myths, the action genre, with a mix of comedy, then you will LOVE this book series.

If you liked Diary of a Wimpy Kid, even to the sightest amount, you will love Happyface by Stephan Emond. In this story Happyface is a nerd that nobody likes, except Chloe, possibly the most beautiful girl in school and his best friend. But then his parents got divorced and he moves to a new city with his mom. He goes to a competely new school and falls for a completely new girl, so he decides to change his image by always smiling (thus his nickname). the whole story is written as a diary and give that personal feel that always hooks a reader.Happyface make you think of all the times we tried to be in the popular croud. Its a book you will never regret reading.

Eragon by Christopher Paolini

Eragon is a book about a 15-year-old male named, not suprisingly, Eragon. Eragon lost both of his parents at an early age, and lives with his uncle, Garrow, and his cousin, Roran. While hunting in a hated strip of mountains called The Spine, Eragon finds a strange blue stone and decides to pick it up and see what it's worth. Things happen, and Eragon finds out that it was never an ordinary blue stone; he had found one of the very few dragon eggs from ages past. Before he knows it, Eragon, with his dragon Saphira, becomes one of the last of the Dragon Riders, a group from many centuries ago who were the peacekeepers and fought against evil. However, one of them got corrupt with power and killed the others, becoming the strongest of all and ruling the land with an iron fist. Oh, and he's immortal. Eragon is the only one with even a small chance of defeating him, and since the evil ruler attacked his hometown, Eragon sets out on a journey to restore peace to the land. The book takes awhile to pick up speed, but once it gets going it stays going. Paolini wasn't known as a professional when he wrote this, but he deserves that title now. This is a great (albeit long) book, pick it up now. Or Paolini will find you.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J. R. R. Tolkien

I will have to say that Tolkien is a master of plot and character. These books are excellent - if you can get through all of the descriptions. He spends an overly amoutn of time with scenary. It became so bad I could swear that he spent a paragraph describing a leaf and at least two for some butterflies. So if you want to wade through unnecessary descriptions, read the books. Otherwise watch the movies.

Briar Rose is a really good book about this girl, Becca, whose grandmother would always tell her about Briar Rose, or Sleeping Beauty. Her grandmother always seemed to think she was Briar Rose. So when she dies,she makes Becca promise her she would inherit her "castle". So she goes on this long, confusing, adventure to find out about her grandmother's life. Of course, she ends up falling in love along the way. It's an awesome book, with a really good plot. I loved it. :)

Chibi Vampire by Yuna Kagesaki

Ever since The Twilight Saga had hit the shelves it seems like nobody can get enough of vampires. Chibi Vampire is manga series by Yuna Kagesaki. It tells the story of Karin Maaka, a 16 year old highschool girl who is an extraordinary vampire. Like in most vampire stories, vampires can't walk on broad daylight, hate garlics, and suck blood. Karin Maaka is a different story; instead of drinking blood and sucking it out of her victims, she produces excess blood and injects it to her victims. Not only is she the opposite of her family that are vampires, she can walk during the day, hates the dark, and can't even control a bat. She's basically a human. Of course she feels alone and sad since she can't have a normal relationship with humans except for her one best friend and her haven't yet awakened vampire sister. Then next thing she knew a new guy named Kenta Usui (he's human) transferred to her school. With Kenta, Karin learns how to fall in love, get hurt, and understand her true self.

Uglies is a funny book about a future world where everyone is "ugly" until they turn 16, when they have an operation to become "pretty".

Tally is a 15 year old Ugly, impatient for her operation. When she becomes friends with a girl named Shay, she is confused about why Shay doesn't want to be Pretty. Shay runs away to an only Ugly town and Tally is in trouble. In order to become Pretty, she becomes a spy and follows Shay. Eventually she changes her mind and decides to stay in the Ugly town, just as her "boss" comes to kidnap them all.

I loved this book because it's funny, adventerous, and romantic. it has a great lesson and is wonderfully written. I can't wait to read the second book, Pretties.

Poisened Honey is a great story about two of the bible's most famous people.

As a child, Mari Magdalene is like a lot of children, wanting to have fun and getting in trouble. When she gets married to an old man she starts using spells to survive! Because of this, she becomes strongly possessed. After using a spell to kill her husband, Mari's brother takes her to see Yeshua, who drives the spirits away.

This story also includes Matthew, the tax collector. When Matthew's brother James runs away, disapproving of his father's work, Matthew becomes unsure of his once strong admiration for his father. Soon though, a man comes and asks Matthew if he would like to work as a tax collector near Magdala. Matthew agrees, and in trying to be better at his work, he soon becomes worse than his father.

In the end, Matthew and Mari travel together to meet Yeshua and become his disciples.

I loves this book because it was funny, sad, and has romance. It was amazingly well written and had a great plot.

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

This year, for my summer reading, I decided to go back, way back. I've been systematically reading through a list of my favorite classics from my early childhood. For some, such a list may consist of Junie B. Jones and Captain Underpants; I have always been a bit strange, and my list consists of books such as Black Beauty, Oliver Twist, and The Secret Garden.

The Secret Garden is the story of a young English girl, Mary Lennox, who at the turn of the century is living in India (which was still part of the British Empire). At the beginning of the book, Mary's mother and father are both killed by cholera (a deadly virus), and she is sent to live with her uncle in his home, Misselthwaitee Manor.

As she adjusts to living in a country she has never set foot in, Mary learns about herself, friendship, and the world around her. She finds adventure in discovering the secrets of the Manor and even searching for what she believes is a ghost.

The Secret Garden is a heartwarming story that has enchanted readers for nearly a century, and I am firmly among their numbers.

The book Duchessina is a really interesting fiction book based on historical events. It is about a young woman named Caterina De' Medici or "Duchessina" and all the horrible events she has to go through just because she is a Medici. The book isn't like the typical cliche' happy endings like in most stories. It has its own very unexpected twist in the end. It has its own way of warming your heart at the same time makes you wonder "Why the heck did that happen in the end!" Though it is rather interesting and I recommend it for people who like these kind of things.

Little Brother by Cory Doctorow

Little Brother is about a 17-year-old boy named Marcus Yallow. While ditching school to play a scavenger hunt-type game with a few friends, the San Francisco Bay bridge is bombed by terrorists. People from around the site of the attack are taken by the Department of Homeland Security to a remote island off of the shoreline of San Francisco for questioning. However, the people are treated like prisoners for the few days that they’re held captive. Upon his return from the island and finding out that one of friends never made it out, Marcus swears revenge against the DHS and promises to rescue his friend, Darryl. I thought this book was pretty interesting, because it’s based around technology that’s right around the corner but isn’t really there yet. If you’re the type of person who likes books about government conspiracies and questions about freedom, then this is the book for you. Heck, if you’re the type of person who can read (I’m gonna assume you are by this point) then you’ll like the book.

If you missed the Bossier Parish Library's Spring Festival, you missed a lot! Nine teams competed in the scavenger hunt! The technology department received 41 cell phone donations for the Hopeline Drive! Gorilla Joe, the new teen services and technology department mascot, made an appearance, posing with scavenger hunt winners, Miss Bossier City, the library director, the cat in the hat, and a few kids! A famous actress even came out and enjoyed the festival with her daughter! Like I said, if you weren't there, you missed a lot! :)

Hearts surrounded in stone more formidable than the most intimidating of nature's mountains and sunk into fetid, acidic pits born of rejection. Irony jumps to my mind. How odd that we relate on what separates us from the masses. Both of us, not just tossed as trash but dropped to the ground like putrid and smoldering steel, assaulting the senses and melting the flesh of those around us.

Why is it I'm doomed to find happiness in transgression?
Is this what makes men evil? If so, is this what I am?

Goth Girl Rising by Barry Lyga

The book Goth Girl Rising by Barry Lyga is a book I would recommend for teens who have troubles because of a dead parent or the whole "emo/goth" thing. It's really interesting and is a sequel to the book The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl, which is also by Barry Lyga. ( I would recommend this book too.) This book is about Kyra Sellars aka Goth Girl opinions on things after she was sent to a mental institute (like Brentwood) and how much she wanted to take revenge on Fanboy for forgetting her while she was gone for six months. Turned out that he really was trying to communicate with her during the summer but Kyra's dad deleted all the emails. This is a really good book and has a lot of twists and turns. So if you're into the whole Goth Girl taking revenge on a comic fanatic then you'd really love this book!

A Whole Nother Story by Dr. Cuthbert Soup

A Whole Nother Story is about a man named Ethan Cheeseman, who is trying to perfect his time-machine, the CVR. He and his kids are on the run from the government agencies who want to get their filthy hands on the time-machine, for reasons that are never fully explained. So Ethan and his chidlren (Jough, Maggie, and Gerard) and his psychic dog, who barks when danger is near, constnatly move from town to town, changing their names and identities.

In their crazy travels, they meet various members of Captain Jibby's Traveling Circus, which has an odd cast of performers: a strong man who hurt his back too bad to lift anything, a fortune-teller with short-term memory loss, a tight-rope walker who had his speaking privileges revoked, and a sword swallower who lost his hand while feeding a tiger. While camping, they also come across a cowboy who wants to be a poet, and is trying to come up with something good enough for the annual poem contest. The Cheeseman family is being pursued by three different companies: one named Plexiwave, which ordered Agents 5, 23, 88, and 207 to take the CVR from the Cheesemans, one whose name is unknown, but they have Agents Aitch Dee and El Kyoo chasing after the Cheeseman family, and a third one who also has no name, but Agents Pavel and Leon (who's a chimpanzee) to use to trail the Cheesemans. All 3 of the coprorations may be on their trail, but the Cheesemans have a reason to risk their lives for the CVR: Olivia Cheeseman (Ethan's late wife) was murdered by Plexiwave so they could get the CVR. Ethan might have been persuaded, but Olivia, realizing that these people would use it for evil, refused any offer, no matter how much money they were wililng to give. That's when Plexiwave realized: the only way to get the CVR would be to get Olivia out of the way. So, she was called in for a doctor's appointment, in which she found that their normal doctor was sick and so a stand-in did the appointment. The stand-in doctor (who was working for Plexiwave, and probably killed the normal doctor) injected her with a drug that was supposed to keep her healthy. But of coure, Plexiwave is evil. The drug made Olivia's health rapidly get worse until one day, when she could live no longer. But in her sickness, she realized what had happened and re-coded the CVR so that even if Plexiwave did get it, they couldn't use it. The only problem was, she never told the new code needed to Ethan. She did write it down, but Ethan only has the first half of the paper. And he can't find the time to test out a bunch of different combinations, due to him constantly having to take apart the CVR and run off to a new town so they don't get caught by any of the 3 corporations. The book seems like a kid's book judging by the cover (and yes, I know that stupid saying) but it's worth reading in to. Considerint that thisis the author's first book, it has a good plotline and cliffhanger ending. It's funny at times as well. So get it. Now.

Raven's Gate by Anthony Horowitz

Raven's Gate is about a 14-year old named Matthew Freeman. As punishment for a crime he didn't really commit, he's given a choice: 3 years in an institution, or living with an old woman named Jayne Veverill. It would have been better if he had chosen the former. But strange things are happening in the small town of Lesser Malling - and he's the center of it all. If you're into fantasy-type stuff, this is a great book. Just make sure to grab the rest of the series, because once you pick this up, you won't put it down till you're finished.

At first this book kind of set me back because it was a non-fiction book. But I was so wrong. Really this book is now one of my favorites. So anyway, this book is about 600 teenagers writing one sentence that has to have 6 words. Doesn't sound that hard. It is though. Try it right now. A six worded sentence that sums up your life. Yeah right. Anyway, there are stories of pain, anguish and funny moments in this book. Some make you go "Aww that sucks." Some just make you laugh. It reminds you that everyone has their own stories. I suggest this book to everyone and anyone.

The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor

The Looking Glass Wars is the upside down version of Alice in Wonderland. It follows the story of Princess Alyss who stumbles upon teh real world after escaping her Aunt Redd's attack on her kingdom. From there on, she must survive in the world of reality while war rages in the world of fantasy.

I enjoyed reading The LGW because of its characters, and steady flowing plot. Its theme of war and monarchy fueled most of the story. Just reading it makes sense when you're comparing it to the original. The LGW is the first in a trilogy.

I recently read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. It was a very good read. It is about a runaway boy's adventures with a runaway slave, as they float down the Mississippi River. It shows how through his experiences, he is matured from a pickpocketing boy to a man, who follows his heart, even though it contradicts his morals, to do what is right. It is comical, sad, and has a good lesson to teach. I would recommend this book to all teens.

Empire has turned out much like all of Card's recent work. Starting off well in the modern day US, Card expresses his fears of America becoming an imperial state. This idea is Thrown around and discussed until the President and Vice President are assassinated in the White House. Later, NYC is invaded by mechs.

Thrown together and nonsensical, Card's intentions and purpose are unclear throughout. A good read for those suffering ADHD or paranoia.

In a world where violence of any kind is banned, all disputes must be
settled in a online multiplayer-style video game called Epic. This book
is about a boy named Erik who dreams to one day be a dragonslayer. But
when Erik's dad gets sent to prison for past crimes, Erik and his friends
team up to take down Central Allocations (the guys in charge) to get him
out of jail. I liked this book more than usual for its story (which I did
a really bad job of explaining) and its setting, on the technologically
advanced New Earth. There's a sequel called Saga, but sadly, as of writing,
this library does not stock it.

The book Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a fantastic action, suspense, and romance. It's about a girl who must battle for her and her family to stay alive. Her name is Katniss and she lives in district twelve with her mother and little sister. Her life is hard after her father has an accident. Suddenly, everything is up to Katniss to keep her family alive.

When she finds herself with no choice but to go into battle, she vows to let nothing stand in her way. Except, maybe one thing, there can only be one winner. What will Katniss have to do to stay alive? Better yet, what has she done by disobeying the rules? You haven't read a truly wonderful book until you read the Hunger Games, so check it out!

Sarah Dessen completely captured the life of a troubled teenager. Ruby, the main character, has abused drugs and alcohol for many years. Her mother contributed to her disgusting life by being an alcoholic herself, raising Ruby in many different homes and forcing her daughter to work. Nate, Ruby's friend and boyfriend, is the character who shows Ruby that she can have friends. Cora and Jaime become Ruby's guardians. Cora, a lawyer, is Ruby's sister, and Jaime is Cora's husband. Olivia, another character, unexpectedly becomes Ruby's best friend. All of these people contribute to the changes Ruby makes, transforming a troubled teenager to a happy adult. In the book, Lock and Key, Ruby is given a second chance to have a better life.

There are lots of characters and each one is unique. You're always waiting for the next thing to happen. You are just waiting in anticipation for it, and it's always what you least expect. In all it's a good book, and even if you don't like to read books about vampires, this isn't a stereotypical vampire story. It's more as a way to move the plot line. It's a good and definite stand up book in my mind.

Meet Cameron, a 16 year old with an "no expectations, no worries" attitude. He just wants to get through his life with as few problems as possible. But there's one problem, thanks to a human form of a mad cow disease, he's sick and going to die. (Bummer huh?)
Suddenly, before his ideas of hope completely fade away, an angel-like being named Dulcie shows up. Dulcie says to Cameron that there is a cure, but in order to find it he has to find someone called Mr. X. Oh, and he needs to save the world.
And so Cameron sets off on the greatest of all road trips, traveling across America with Gonzo (A video game playing dwarf obsessed with death) and Balder ( A Viking god trapped in a Lawn Gnome) as they find themselves in a strange set of misadventures that involve New Orlean Jazz Musicians, secrets of the universe, drunken frat boys, battling evil forces, giant fire creatures, Cameron losing his virginity, getting a bounty on their heads, taking down a happiness cult, snow globes, and learning what it means to live.
The entire story is filled with tons of fun jokes that will make you laugh. Cameron's narration is filled with sarcastic language and twisted humor. The mix of mystery, tragedy, and humor had me reading all the way to the end. Although the book never gives a real answer about whether or not the events Cameron goes through are real or not, its still a fun and wild ride.

This book keeps you laughing. It is about a boy named Oliver Watson who is one of the smartest and richest people on Earth. He is comparable to Dexter from Dexter's Labratory except he hides his genius from the public and his family. Everyone thinks that he is a complete and hopeless idiot, but really he is full of smart comments that will have you rolling on the floor with alughter. Oliver decides that he will run for class president in order to prove that he is equal to his father. Or is it to get his approval and pride? That is for you to decide.

This book is a fast and enjoyable read. There is some language, but other than that it is very mild.

Michael Z. Williamson is an underdog author from a little known publisher. Despite this, he writes in-depth and realistic sci-fi. The Weapon is the best example of his ability. The book follows Kenneth Chinran through his entire military career serving Freehold, one of a few star nations that have broken away from the majority of humanity. Chinran joins as an angry youth looking to get away from home but is soon picked up for an elite deep cover team sent on a suicide mission to destroy Freehold's greatest enemy, Earth.

A must read for sci-fi fans.

This book is a random collection of true stories about stupid people doing stupid things. There's a lot of variety in the stories, from police forcing a kid to shut down his lemonade stand due to a lack of a permit, to the 8-track, to a woman using a cigarette lighter to peer into a fuel tank. Reading this book, you'll learn one thing: stupidity knows no bounds (or anything else for that matter). I liked this book because I'm one of those people who laugh at this kinda dumb stuff. There's a sequel as well, if you crave more stupidity.

Katrina lives with her grandmother where she helps run their Scandinavian coffeehouse. Life was good till her parents died and a "modern" coffeehouse was put in. Katrina feels like she isn't special and that life is horrible till she meets Malcom, an angel. No really, he is. Katrina is kind to him, so he keeps trying to reward her for her good deed. In the process, they fall in love with each other, but how can a human and an angel live together?

I loves this book. It is absolutely adorable. Katrina is a character that anyone can relate to personality wise. Malcolm is absolutely adorable. Great book to read if you want a few laughs and a warm fuzzy feeling inside at the end.

Monstrumologist is an awesome book full of violence and gore. Everyone should read this well written tale of a boy and his life-threatening adventure fighting monsters. I love it and suggest everyone who loves horror should read it, too. I, myself, don't get nauseous often, but with this one, I had to set it down for a moment because it was described so well.

Have you ever read a book that really spoke to you?

Ever thought about writing a letter to an author to tell them how their book impacted you?

In the Letters About Literature Competition, students are asked to do just that for the chance to win cash prizes!

Students in grades 4-12 may write a personal letter to an author, living or dead, from any genre (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, etc.) explaining how that author’s work changed the student’s way of thinking about the world or themselves. The entry should be written as a personal letter – not a book report or a fan letter. It should express how the book has impacted the student’s life or worldview.

Entries should be sent to the national competition, where the top 30-50 letters in each level will be selected. These top letters will be sent back to the Louisiana State Library so that first, second, and third place winners can be chosen for the state. State winners will be announced in March – first place in each level will receive a $50 Target gift card and $100; second place will receive $75, and third place will receive $50.

In mid-April, the national winners will be chosen from the first place winners in each state. Six national winners will be chosen to receive a $500 Target gift card, and will be able to nominate a school or library to receive a grant. Twelve national honor winners will receive a $100 Target gift card.

If you're not a fan of Dan Brown, you should be. Fan's of Brown's The DaVinci Code and Angels & Demons will not be disappointed. The novel follows the main character, Robert Langdon (a Harvard symbologist), on his quest to unearth the secrets of the Free Masons. Langdon is essentially kidnapped and manipulated into working for the villain when Langdon's friend, Peter Solomon, pays a gruesome visit. In order to save Peter's life, Langdon must discover the Masonic secrets that will lead to godly power, power which the villain hopes to obtain. With the help of Katherine Solomon, Langdon unearths Masonic mysteries, a field of science known as noetics, and ancient symbols hidden in Washington, D.C.; however, Langdon faces a dangerous fiend. Can Langdon make it out alive?

The Wrestlemania Reading Challenge kicks off with Teen Read week on October 19th and continues through January 19th, 2010. Students in grades 5 thru 12 can participate by picking up a reading log at their public library and reading 10 books by January 19th (recording each book on the log). Once participants have finished their reading log, they can turn it in to the library to receive a WWE poster (supplies are limited!).

In addition, all partcipants who complete their reading logs are eligible to enter a bookmart contest. Participants can create a bookmark that encourages reading for a chance to win a trip to see Wrestlemania!

There will be one local winner in each of the three categories of the bookmark contest (grades 5-6, 7-8, 9-12). The winning bookmarks at the local level will be sent on to the regional contest where the winners of the trips to Wrestlmania will be determined.

Teen Read Week - October 18-24

The Bossier Parish Library kicked off Teen Read Week with a bang! Thirty-two teens from around the parish attended a lock-in at the Bossier Central library on Friday, October 16th. Teens solved a mystery, competed in a Fear Factor Food Challenge, and played various video and board games. This was the library's third lock-in! Look for more lock-ins in the future!

This year's theme for Teen Read Week is "Read Beyond Reality". The library is sponsoring two events for the week. The first is an essay contest - read a book that fits the "beyond Reality" theme and write a short essay (even just a paragraph!) that explains why you think the reality in the book is better or worse than our reality. One winner will be chosen out of the entries to receive a $25 gift certificate to Books a Million! Essays are due by 6 PM on Friday, October 23rd.

The second event is "Read Away Your Fines!" Teens ages 13-18 can come into the library Monday, October 19th, through Friday, October 23rd, between 3-5 PM - check in with Tonya Oswalt at the reference desk, and then go to the back of the library to read. For every 15 minutes you spend reading, you'll earn 25 cents in credits that you can use to pay off overdue fines.

Grendel by John Gardner

One of the most famous monsters of the Beowulf tales is a monster called Grendel, a beast who terrorized the Kingdom of Hrothgar.
John Gardner, in an often humorous way, shows the story from Grendel's point of view. The Author gives in insightful view to the characteristics of the monster, gives an explanation to the monster's actions and thoughts, and also gives a view of the way things were during the dark times of that setting. The entire story is well thought out and is a good book for those who have read the Beowulf stories.

Grendel is somewhat an inelegant monster. However, he feels burdened by the fact that he is a monster, being that his mother is the only one that excepts him; despite the fact she can never communicate with him. Feeling trapped in the cave he calls home, he goes out and tries to make sense of the realities of the real world and his existence.

During an event in which he is almost killed by an ox, he discovers humans. Grendel observes the humans from a distance, being that he didn't have much else to do. Through a person called a Shaper, Grendel learns that the humans see him as a creature of evil while the humans see themselves as the "good side". This makes Grendel hate the humans, which soon he starts attacking the them. At one point Grendel meets a Dragon, who tries to discuss with Grendel about the "truths" and such about who Grendel is. The Dragon encourages Grendel and puts a enchantment on him that makes is to where he can't be slain by human weapons. Grendel continues to attack the humans in a psychotic manner. At one point, a couple of mysterious strangers appear at the kingdom that Grendel had been attacking for so long. When Grendel attacks that night, he finds out he is outmatched despite the enchantment the Dragon and loses. Slowly dying, Grendel runs off. Watched by the animals Grendel looked down apon, Grendel ends his life at a plunging death.

A Farewell To Arms by Ernest Hemingway

Overall, Hemingway’s novel was spectacular. In this novel, at least in my opinion, Hemingway appeals to both genders. His uninhibited account of WWI combined with the love story of Catherine and Lieutenant Henry has universal appeal. Hemingway’s prose, however, may take readers a while to get used to. Hemingway’s experience in journalism is truly evident in his short, declarative narration. His prose lacks any poetic element, but rather is straightforward and blunt. The conclusion of A Farewell to Arms also leaves something to be desired. Characteristic with the rest of the novel, the conclusion is short and abrupt, leaving the reader grasping for something more. I can’t give away the ending, but some may accredit the seemingly unfeeling ending to Hemingway’s misogynist attitude. Despite having its drawbacks, I would recommend this book to anyone. Not only is it a rewarding read, but also a classic in American literature.

Night World by L. J. Smith

(Note: Mary's review is on the first omnibus of the series, which includes books 1-3 of the series.)

Now, normally I would refrain from reviewing a vampire love story. But Night World is one of my favorite books now. It has three stories. All deal with finding your soulmate. Two have some vampires in it. In each story, the main characters deal with the finding of their soulmates differently. These stories are beautiful and they really make you think about what you would do. The book is about the size of a medium sized Harry Potter book. But don't be intimidated by the size. It's a good book that I hope you read.

The Dark Mirror by Juliet Marillier

This is the story of two people, Bridei and Tuala. Bridei was sent away from his family at a young age to receive the education of a druid. The purpose of this education is to prepare him for goals in the future. Many seasons have passed when one night young Bridei's life changes forever. He finds an abandoned child in moonlight on his doorstep. It is soon learned that she is not a human child, but a child of the fairy folk.

The two grow up together and as Bridei comes to manhood, he sees the shy girl Tuala blossom into a beautiful woman. Broichan sees the same process and feels only danger...for Tuala could be a key part in Bridei's future...or could spell his doom.

My opinion on the novel is the character plot was a nice process, but the early promise of a great adventure came a bit too late. I believed that was because during most of it, she was trying to develop the two characters, Bridei and Tuala. The author described the imagery in poetic detail and it was easier to imagine.

For anyone whose interested in reading it, you should know beforehand that it's quite a lenghty book; about the length of an Eragon novel. The book is also a historic adult novel, meaning there is some graphic content on certain parts, and a bit of heresy on Chrstianity.

Old Silou Ray

To stand guard, all night and day,
Twas the job assigned to old Silou Ray.

A deal from a man of mystical ways,
let old Silou Ray never run out of days.

As long as the fountain was guarded from whomever,
Old Silou Ray would live forever.

The man gave one rule that had to be met,
"Don't drink from the fountain, or you will regret."

After years passed his curiosity grew;
The secret of the fountain, he never knew.

Going mad to the point where he couldn't think,
Silou knelt down and took a long drink.

His spear and shield fell onto the floor,
for old Silou Ray was forever seen no more.

An eye-opening book!

This book reveals all the evil truths about the fast food industry. Fast food has become a regular part of our lives, but what effects does it have? This book reveals the corruption in the meat industry, injustice in farm pay, and the poor conditions of working in a fast food chain. The book goes back in history to when food laws were first enforced and when slaughter houses were the best places to work. It also covers the mad cow and ecoli scare. After reading this book, you will never be able to look at fast food the same way again.

Anna of Byzantium by Tracy Barrett

Anna is the daughter of the emperor and is heir to the throne. She spends her childhood preparing to rule. Everything seems perfect till her baby brother is born. All focus goes to him and she can now see family fueds. Her grandmother despises Anna's mother and believes that all rulers should do whatever they need to get things done, no matter how horrible or dishonest. Anna's mother, however, believes that a ruler should lead by God's rules. Anna starts to develop thoughts of her own. This leads to her downfall and banishment. Anna learns how to find the good in life. I thought this story was really good. It is almost all true, which helps strengthen the story.

World War II had many dark moments, but none as dark as the Holocaust. In Night, Elie Wiesel tells of his life as a kid in the concentration camps. This book is very graphic and very emotional because he tells you exactly how life was. You see how faith builds and collapses during such a trying time. This book tells you more than any history book will. An amazing, must read book!

Tamar by Mal Peet

The setting is World War II. Tamar is the code name of a resistance fighter. He and Dart are sent to a town and send messages back to London about the work being done. Tamar continues his relationship with a beautiful woman named Marijke. Tamar's partner, Dart, gets jealous of Tamar and Marijke's relationship because he is in love with Marijke. Between the war and envy, tensions get stronger. The book has two different stories. Tamar's granddaugther goes on a journey that Tamar left for her after he died. She learns not only about her grandfather, but also herself.

This book is amazing. I loved it. I didn't really care for the ending, but the story was still amazing. I didn't want to give away too much because it is so much better when you don't know what is coming!

Summer Reading Program

Last week we had our first program day of the Teen Summer Reading Program! Thirteen teens participated in the first day, and had fun playing various improv type games. Teens also learned how the program will work.

Each participant chooses a goal for themselves, of at least 10 points. They can then earn those points by reading, attending programs, or writing book reviews. At least five points of your goal must be earned by reading. To get more information about earning points (such as how many points each book is worth), stop by the reference desk at the Bossier Central Library.

Wednesday, June 24th, is the second day of the program. Teens will make group collages and recreate a painting originally done by a famous painter! The painting recreation will be displayed in the teen area of the Bossier Central Library beginning on Thursday, June 25th.

Teens Top Ten Nominations - Identical by Ellen Hopkins
