Teen Summer Reading Program

All teenagers in Bossier Parish, between the ages of 13-18, are invited to participate in the Teen Summer Reading Program!  This year, three branches will have weekly programs: the Bossier Central Branch, the Aulds Branch, and the East 80 Branch.  The dates are as follows:

*There will not be any programs during the week of July 4th.

There is also a reading challenge that teens may participate in, even if they do not attend the weekly programs.  For every 3 hours spent reading, participants will get a small prize, up to five prizes.  For every 15 hours spent reading, participants will get an entry in the grand prize drawing.  The grand prize is a Samsung Galaxy 7" tablet.  Reading logs will be given out on the first day of the program at each branch, and are due back at the library by July 24th.  The grand prize winner will be selected and contacted on Monday, July 28th.  The Benton and Haughton branches will also have reading logs available.

Teen Summer Reading Program Chatter

We had a fun Teen Summer Reading Program this year!  Participants build spaghetti and marshmallow towers, and played Under the Earth Trivia They learned about the Caddo Indians and archaeology, and made their own clay pottery.  They made hedgehogs out of old books and wrote background stories for classified ads.  Those stories were crazy fun!  On the final day of the program, participants had the chance to win several prizes, such as hobbit socks, t-shirts, a jellyfish mood lamp, and gift certificates to local businesses.  The grand prize for reading was a Kindle Fire.

For the first year, two of our other branches participated in the Teen Summer Reading program by having some passive programs available for teens to complete.  Hopefully in the future, other branches will join in and perhaps the full program will make it's way to all the branches!

It was another successful year with lots of reading!  Now we're looking forward to next year's program!

Teen Summer Reading Program - America's Next Top Monster

On the final day of the Teen Summer Reading Program, we had a America's Next Top Monster Contest. Teens were given time to dress themselves up as monsters and create a monster persona and description. Here are a few pictures from the event!

Teen Summer Reading Program - Video Storytelling

At the Teen Summer Reading Program lock-in, the teens created a video story by each contributing one sentence to the story after only hearing the person's sentence that was before them. The final story was crazy and random! Here it is!

During the July 18th Teen Summer Reading Program, Master Irvin from Master Irvin's House of Discipline showed the teens some self defense moves, and then the teens competed in a Ninja Skill Challenge.

How the Program Works

If you read 3 books, you will get a small prize and a raffle drawing entry.
(*You will get a prize for every three books you read, up to five prizes)

If you read 15 books, you get a grand prize entry.

If you attend a weekly summer program, you will get a raffle drawing entry.

*You must attend the final program to win raffle drawing prizes.

MECHANICS:

The Teen Summer Reading Program is geared towards youth between the ages of 13 to 18 years old.  The program usually consists of crafts, games, theme related activities, and special guests. The weekly program lasts approximately 1 ½ - 2 hours.

 Each teen will fill out a reading log with his/her name and age.  The teen will take the reading log home and record the title of each book read during the summer program.  For every three books the teen reads he/she will receive a small prize and a raffle drawing entry (up to five prizes and five entries).  If the teen reads fifteen books, he/she will receive an entry in the grand prize drawing.  Each teen will also receive a raffle drawing entry for each weekly summer program they attend.  All raffle drawings, including the grand prize drawing, will take place at the final program.

Any teen that wants to attend the lock-in program must read at least three books and return a permission slip signed by a parent.

Books to be counted on the logs may be library books or personally owned books, including fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels, and magazines. 

Teens do not have to attend each weekly summer program in order to participate in the Teen Summer Reading Program.

Summer Reading Program

Last week we had our first program day of the Teen Summer Reading Program! Thirteen teens participated in the first day, and had fun playing various improv type games. Teens also learned how the program will work.

Each participant chooses a goal for themselves, of at least 10 points. They can then earn those points by reading, attending programs, or writing book reviews. At least five points of your goal must be earned by reading. To get more information about earning points (such as how many points each book is worth), stop by the reference desk at the Bossier Central Library.

Wednesday, June 24th, is the second day of the program. Teens will make group collages and recreate a painting originally done by a famous painter! The painting recreation will be displayed in the teen area of the Bossier Central Library beginning on Thursday, June 25th.
